Actually, I always thought that God gave us the weekends via the Hebrews. Something about resting on the seventh day of every week.

To think that modern socialism gave us the weekend is ignoring thousands of years of history.

I'm confused as to whether "concerned libertarian" actually thinks he got anyone "fired up" about anything at all.

Anyways, drink.

Actually I was fucking with you guys. I am certainly not a libertarian. I am not a socialist. I just love getting you guys fired up about some dumb ass topic. As for Republicans...they have a cross dresser, a homophobe, a senseless old man, and a member of the Christian New Reich running for office. As for libertarians, they are the biggest fucking joke I have ever heard of. But they do agree with Republicans on one issue: a free market. The dems are wrong on the issue as well, but I certainly would take their shitty policies over your do nothing attitude anyday.

A concerned Libertarian wrote:
"ANY system that does not secure the basic well-being of EVERY citizen is a failure. Yes…there have been a lot of failures. Maybe socialist policies are not the answer. But unrestrained capitalism is already a widely know FAILURE."

Um, are you sure you're a libertarian? Because you don't seem to agree with or understand the fundamental principles of the whole thing.

First of all, most libertarians don't advocate for totally unrestrained capitalism; they argue for minimal government interference in the market. The government still has a role, however, in enforcing laws and making sure everyone plays by the rules.

As for your poorly constructed "one-handed machinist" analogy, don't you think that his family, friends and community could help him better than some centralized, government agency? How can you call yourself a libertarian and still argue for a welfare state?

I won't even touch your last post where you declared that "to insult the democrats is a terrible thing." Actually, I will touch that. It's the stupidest thing I've ever heard.

Since you left us with a quote, I'll return the favor.

"The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessings; the inherent virtue of socialism is the equal sharing of miseries."
- Winston Churchill

So you are saying that the handicapped are less of a people and should be treated differently than others? Should people with only one hand have their own water fountains? I’m confused why you call yourself a concerned Libertarian and denounce capitalism, among other things. And this unrestrained capitalism you talk about, how much experience have you had with that? Any inkling of unrestrained capitalism has been lost for generations. Unrestrained capitalism, in my opinion, has never been given a chance. I guess I’m having trouble finding your argument.

Capitalism is not a perfect system. There is no perfect system in this. I'm saying capitalism, if treated properly, is more beneficial to a society than socialism, and, god forbid, communism.

But in all fairness unrestrained capitalism does leave some individuals up a creek and without a paddle. Sure, there is a lot of opportunity in America. But an ex-machinist who lost a hand is going to have a hard time finding a job to support his family. And what does he live on until he finds one? Are we simply supposed to shrug it off and let them die. ANY system that does not secure the basic well-being of EVERY citizen is a failure. Yes...there have been a lot of failures. Maybe socialist policies are not the answer. But unrestrained capitalism is already a widely know FAILURE.

I'm not sure that Steve is calling against all socialist ideas up on his soapbox, though he never says he's not, but a socialist idea and fullfledged Socialism found in Europe are long roads apart. Many people today quickly blame capitalism for America's problems, when its poor politics that are to blame for many of those. To say "Capitalism failed" negates your whole argument.

socialism gave america the weekend. THE WEEKEND.

when you have saturday and sunday off, thats a socialist idea. on the communist party platform in the 20's.

thats just one example of how socialist ideas are tied into our everyday american life in ways that we all appreciate.

because they are good ideas.

i am sure when we rid ourselves of socialism and steve hawke from eugene's kids are dragged off and chained to a dangerous machine and forced to work 12 hours a day, 7 days a week, he'll appreciate the contribution to society that american socialists have made.

To say that socialists and democrats are the same thing is an exageration. It is true that many services have been socialized. The Republican party tends to criticize Social Security and proposals for nationalized health care. Lets not forget that essential services like fire, police and education are also socialized services. The truth is that socialized services CAN be a positive thing for society. Everything in Moderation!!! That is the key. For Steve to make such a statement would be equivalent to someone saying that all libertarians are anarchists, or that members of the Christian new "reich" right are all fascists. Everything has a place...in moderation. In all fairness, lets not revert to backwards, stone age thinking. Oh...and Capitalism failed. We need security blankets for everyone with basic unemployment. And one last thing to consider...those who live by the sword shall die by the sword. At some point, our nation must learn to coexist with other nations that hold different values than our own. Otherwise, we shall perish. Sorry, one more thing. To insult the democrats is a terrible thing. After all, Lincoln stated that a "house divided can't stand." The factioning of this nation will be our undoing...unless we learn to compromise and work together. BIPARTISANSHIP. Learn that Steve.
