The collective members of the SI do utilize the free speach area of the EMU amphitheater. Last year it was Goldman and now its that tall kid with glasses who's out there with drum at the crack ass of dawn. In a cloudy state of mind, I think i would say that is a benefit, or dare I, contribution to the University.

Can't the ASUO just give the group $2,000 to come entertain us every day outside?

Of course, there is always the "institutional racism" chestnut... I hear that one is pretty effective.

Great article, in my opinion. He's right about the existence of the SI magazine, though...I asked my roomates whether or not they have heard of the thing. Not a soul seemed to know what, where, or how often they distribute.

It really is undeserving of them to hoard $20,000 for...what? Four publications, and a reprint? The SI has been protecting behind the Southworth decision over issues of defunding, because you can't discriminate against a student publication over content. Yet, when it comes down to the nuts and bolts of spending money, budgeting, and practicing fiscal responsibility, this shield offers no further protection to the questions that are raised.

Not to mention the fact that it sends student dollars off campus... into prisons. Speaking of which, the ASUO is now responsible for the "social, cultural, educational and physical development" of prisoners as well. I think they got roped into it because technically Bean and Hamilton are classified by the state as prisons.

"the Insurgent claims to have a mailing list ... of approximately 700 ... most of these people are prisoners. (Couldn't Amnesty International put a stop to this, under grounds that it represents cruel and unusual punishment?)"

Graf's got a point, which means my money is funding the torture of prisoners. I guess it's not the first time.
