Lets put the activities of the ASUO into perspective for all the liberals out there: If Bush increased troop strength in Iraq by only 2.5% this year, as opposed to a potential 20% increase, you wouldn't be applauding him for taking a step in the right direction and saying look at all the good work we've done. A liberal wouldn't be happy at "just" a 2.5% troop increase.

So when the ASUO doesn't increase the fee by 7%, try to defund the Commentator, or have any convicted felons within its ranks, while relatively this is a good thing, we must not lose perspective on how much the I-Fee raises the barriers to college entry and what a corrupt, incompetent mess the entire association is.

Tim, take a look at the campus "crime" statistics and you'll realize the only crime they can come up with is MIP. There is no reason we even need DPS with the EPD right there anyway.

De Lancie: I suppose you're right, calling ASUO candidates retarded is a pretty big insult to retards everywhere. I hereby retract my naming of the Veil of Idiocy swirling around the ASUO as a "Retard Field" and thusly rename it the "Drooling Mongoloid Vortex".

Ted: That's not a bad perspective, really. And hey, there's a lot of stuff I'm for, just not when it comes to student government. That I'm mostly just against. I'm for them giving all the money back, and I'm for them concentrating on volunteer efforts and I'm for them trying to get DPS and the University Admin to stop being assholes (by maybe eliminating about 2/3 of the conduct code, and having DPS focus on real problems rather than the BS they focus on now), but beyond that there's really not much.

Tim: your points are well taken... I would not attempt to defend the quality of governance that the ASUO provides. What I have been trying to do is not simply be another voice decrying the moronity (since we're inventing words here now), but to articulate a direction towards a good student government. When politicians listen and take action in the right direction, I praise them for just that, not because I think they are great individuals or even great politicians. You have to start somewhere, and I personally believe that it takes far more conviction, intellectual vigor and guts to be for something than against everything. I know that my considerable effort may well be for naught, but I will require more convincing to believe that it wasn't the right thing to do.

T: joking? wie bitte?

DeLancie: Identity politics have come a long way since the civil rights movement... and not all for the better.

Tim threw political "correctiveness" out the window a long time ago. Maybe he needs a new pair of politically "corrective" glasses. You have a pair, De Lancie?

so i guess we have now thrown political corecttiveness completely out the window. Tim don't make an ass of yourself by saying that people who run are idiots which means retards.

and T...when people say that race is "not an issue worth disscusing" its not becasue that person does not value cultural diversity. But cultural diversity is not just about having a certain precentage of "minorities" (who sara hates I guess) go to our school. In a way that makes them just a tool of the Universities to look good in order to get more funding. Cultural Diversity is about have people with different backgrounds, schemas, experiences, that have all shaped his/her thoughts and views on the world. Some of this is becasue I have a different color skin that someone else. But this is also about location of home, age, economic status, type of high school one attended, etc. I think the point is lets not always result to making race the biggest issue becasue then it will continue to divide us. I thought the point was to stand hand in hand, no segregation, not "equal but seperate". I hope that this years elections can be about what will make UofO better for all students, or a majority of students. The minority can only function within a majority. Without a majority the minority is the majority....does someone want all of the majority dead...i mean seriously

You can be involved in the process and still be a cool, jaded cynic like yours truly. Just stay drunk and hep yourself up on adderall. Though if you've managed to make any steps that's always a good thing, I went to every OSPRIG PFC meeting for three years. I boisterously defended the ODE from Melton/Morale's vendetta against them, I even argued against the travel budget for the Conflict Resolution kids because you'd have to have driven over 2,000 miles (at the per diem then) to equal the cost of the plane tickets they wanted.

Some of it worked, some of it didn't, but the argument is worth making. It's important, however, to remain cynical about the outcomes because 1) Almost everyone who runs for any office as anything other than a joke is an idiot* and 2) Next year's idiots will not pay attention to anything the previous idiots did, meaning that there's not even some sort of moron constant...it's a Retard Field that's constantly in flux.

*There are, of course, some notable exceptions and those of you out there reading this blog who are one of them know it already.

While I appreciate the jaded cynicism of my elders and betters, I beg them to forgive my youthful optimism... discourse on the role and responsibilities of the ASUO has made leaps and bounds this year. Fiscal responsibility has become a major influence, and structural reform is becoming accepted as an inevitability. This didn't come about because the Commentator was aloof and disconnected from the process, and it won't continue if we completely give up now. Does it make me look like a overly-credulous melvin? Maybe. Will it make a difference? Perhaps, a little. Would I blame next years editor if they concentrated on more entertaining fare? Not even a little bit.

<em>but if you think that posting anonymous shit like this will make a difference in the election you are wrong.</em>

That's a true statement, but misses by half: if you think anything, at all, will make a difference in the election you're wrong.

Does anyone who knows Sara really think that she hates minorities? Why is there always someone in ASUO politics that tries to use race and ethnicity to divide people? Aren't there real issues worth discussing? Is this a scare tactic to keep people out of the ASUO process? Does anyone else share my fondness for rhetorical questions?

If Sea lamprey were hot, then I'd start talking about Jared. But they're not, so I don't have to.

And since it has been confirmed that Jared will not run for a second term, I guess that means that Hamilton/Papaillou (sp?) are next. I mean, Sara...now SHE is smokin' (and not tokin').
