[...] But with that said, I’ve always found the pro-choice movement majority’s inconsistent treatment of the implied right to privacy to be one of the more hypocritical (drink!) positions taken by either side. To use the Emerald as an example, their Editorial Board supports the right of a 15 year old girl to have an abortion without the knowledge of her parents. But one year ago they were adament in opposing individual rights in Oregon as they applied to adults. According to their logic, parental notification laws, which are overwhelmingly supported by a majority of Americans, should be unconstitutional under the implied right to privacy. Meanwhile sex shows, which are not widely supported, should not be protected by similar rights. As I pointed out then, this is an inconsistent position to take. It essentially reduces the implied right to privacy to nothing more than an implied right to have an abortion or take contraception. Yet another reason why rights should be written into the Constitution, not divined from the bench. [...]

I'm sorry, but has it occurred to any of the "defenders of the faith" that you are giving the Insurgent exactly what they want? The point of the cartoons as I see it (and I may be giving the Collective more credit than it's due) is to rile up Christians and in doing so expose the ugly, free speech supressing, intolerant side of religion. Why give those loons exactly what they want? Your futile attempts to overturn Supreme Court case law and fire a competent University president not only prove this intolerance, but also plays you as the fools of a handfull of "Anarcho-Marxist" provocateurs. Hard to say which is worse.

The right to free speech is an extremely precious victory that was won at a great price, the loss of the lives of many. This is what they died for? Yeah, I'm pissed off! Grow up Jessica Brown! You have dishonored yourself as well as your family.

Use the paper for intellegent discourse. There are many significant and difficult issues that need to be dealt with in society today. I would like to think your generation will have some contribution to solutions to serious world problems, and a desire to help those in need.

By the way, your publication is paid for by required student fees. Maybe your funding could go away after all.

To Able about this little quote;

"What is the problem? Wasn’t it OK when cartoons of Mohammed were published? There was no protest there."

I don’t know where you were but there was mass rioting over this and many people died!

Isn't it funny how students become all knowing when they go to college? They get spirituality. But it’s not the kind they should have. They are so busy trying to find that special thing that makes them stand out and be different from other people; they will do or say any audacious thing just to be unique. 15 minutes of fame. Lets see how many people that I can offend or belittle because I am smarter than everyone else. But what these people don’t realize is that when they say these things or show these things, they are hurting and offending people that love them. I am not talking about me or any other Christian (even though I do love you). I am talking about family members that believe with all their hearts in God and Jesus Christ.

Don’t tell me the parents of people that painted these pictures or write these articles put them on the refrigerator with glowing pride for all to see. I think families are ashamed of their children and feel great pain in their hearts for the vast amount of knowledge that makes what they have done ok to them.

To all of you that think what you are doing is some profound thing that no one has ever done before, Go ahead and paint the pictures, write the articles and offend people, Just like they did 2000 years ago. What you wrote will be forgotten in a matter of weeks, what Jesus did will be remembered forever. With controversy comes discussion. Keep spreading of the Word of God! Thank to all of you free thinkers for keeping My Savior in the minds and hearts of the world!

I will pray for you and if it offends you that I pray for you then to bad! After all this is a free country!

P.S. I have a Bachelors Degree in Fine Art.

Duane said it best. What is so different about true Christianity, and specifically Jesus Christ himself, is that suffering and persecution for God's glory is a doorway to blessing. Christ himself said in Matthew 5:11-12, "Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great..." Jesus knew that it was coming for his followers, and he knew that he would suffer the ultimate persecution. And the amazing thing is that he did it all willingly and then, while on the cross, asked God to forgive all those that had crucified him. This Jesus that so many of us mock today, is the same one who loves us so much that he died to give us the opportunity to be in a real relationship with the creator of this universe. You've got to admit, that is amazing.

I am a Christian, and I am not mad at the insurgent. I will pray for the staff there, and that God will have mercy on you, and hopefully you will see that there is a God that created all, believe that Jesus is God's son and that He died for us, and ask His forgiveness before it is too late. God Bless.

LET ME SAY TO THE ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF OREGON (ASUO) & ALL THOSE WHO CONSIDER IT A PRIVILEGE TO MOCK THE LORD JESUS CHRIST!!!

ALTHOUGH YOUR GOAL WAS TO "ATTACK CHRISTIANS" OR WHOMEVER YOU THINK WOULD BE OFFENDED BY THIS......
YOU DID NOT ACCOMPLISH THIS.

YOUR ATTACK MOST IMPORTANTLY WAS PLACED UPON OUR (including your) LOVING LORD GOD ALMIGHTY, CREATOR OF ALL, who died for ALL OF OUR SINS (including yours.)

YOU SHOULD RUMINATE EXTENSIVELY OVER WHAT YOU HAVE DONE & WHAT YOU MIGHT CONSIDER DOING IN THE FUTURE, BECAUSE AS THE SAYING GOES....
"YOU REAP WHAT YOU SOW."

Tom:

This isn't a spiritual matter for most people. This is a legal matter. The spiritual issue is totally separate from the issue before us. The issue is that there are people calling for the defunding of an entity that essentially cannot be defunded under Southworth v. Board of Regents.

Secondly, the legal issue of decency could be used if the City of Eugene wanted to prescribe it, however they may run into trouble under US v. Miller.

That doesn't mean, Tom, that Christians cannot be angry about this. They should be angry, they should be outraged. They ARE outraged. The best way to counter this is by organizing your own group (which has been done with Students of Faith), and running your own print page.

Be proactive in a creative way, instead of stifling your case by attacking case law that is rock solid.

Tom:
"Angry" Christians can (and maybe should) be up in arms. The point is that is as far as the response has any sensible point. All you can do is be mad!! No one can defund the Insurgent, or the Commentator, or and other currently funded group by citing viewpoint as the sole objection. It is out of Frohnmayer and the ASUO's hands. Read the Southworth decision!

While everyone babbles about how mad they are, you are ALL missing the fact that Jesus Christ, a man who willingly died to save you from your (obviously large amount of) sins was defamed, degraded and mocked thru these cartoons. It was not the first time He was mocked however, just read the book of Matthew, Mark, Luke or John. He was mocked, ridiculed, beaten, spit upon, kicked, and nailed to a cross - all willingly. You all should be wary of what fate befalls those who speak against the creator of the universe. Beliefs aside, why risk eternal damnation and why on God's earth would anyone be against someone for defending their beliefs. Isn't that all part of free speech too? Get a (spiritual) life. Get off the computer, go outside and look up and ponder why you are here. It is not to submit rediculous, pathetic responses to "angry" Christians who are all up in arms.

<blockquote>Somebody should tell thm that KUGN is not a university radio station.</blockquote>Actually, they have a point here. KUGN isn't a university radio station, but it promoted itself as the "Voice of the Ducks" and broadcast UO sporting events. The PC mavens in the ASUO were saying that a radio station that broadcast Michael Savage should not also be allowed to call itself the "Voice of the Ducks". In case, you know, people got confused and thought Savage was actually Mike Bellotti.

It was all very, very stupid. Anyway, if people are going to argue on the Insurgent's behalf based on the principle of tolerance for differing viewpoints - rather than the specific SCOTUS case law having to do with the incidental fee model - then bringing up the KUGN example seems fair enough to me.

Actually, they have a point here. KUGN isn’t a university radio station, but it promoted itself as the “Voice of the Ducks” and broadcast UO sporting events. The PC mavens in the ASUO were saying that a radio station that broadcast Michael Savage should not also be allowed to call itself the “Voice of the Ducks”. In case, you know, people got confused and thought Savage was actually Mike Bellotti.

"The Insurgent would never show a naked graphic of the Rev. Martin Luther King kissing another man, both sporting erections. But offending Christians was of no concern to the Insurgent or to University President Dave Frohmayer. [sic]"

This sounds like a challenge to me, to suggest that a magazine entitled THE INSURGENT refuse to print something inflamatory, and not a very bright one...

Is it any surprise that the folks running the American Family Association are fucking stupid? I'm thinking no. Although I appreciate them not hot-linking our .pdf or mentioning us at all.

<blockquote>Maybe I just don’t understand the how the hypocrisy game is played.</blockquote>I can help you there, actually, Abe. The way the hypocrisy game is played is that whenever someone random shows up in our comment section, assumes (for no reason I've been able to figure out) that we're the Insurgent, or the Catholic League of America, or Bill O'Reilly, or the American Family Association, and starts talking about hypocrisy, you have to drink. It was Gabrielle's idea, and it's been absolutely killing us the last few days.
