Of course, conservative lawprofs, National Review folks, and George Will get called “ultraconservative” all the time. As do most of the best judges on the bench. Shit, to Charles Schumer anyone to the right of Charles Schumer is “ultraconservative.” It doesn’t necessarily mean the same thing as “religious conservative.”

Yeah, but the Focus on the Family nutjob wing was solid, at least to begin with. James Dobson had a message from God on the subject, or something.

My impression was that the opposition to Miers began with what Hugh Hewitt called the “elites” - lawprofs, National Review folks, George Will.
