Miers Withdraws Nomination
Harriet Miers withdrew her nomination this morning.
While this is almost certainly a good thing in the long term, I’m pretty pissed off that she had to withdraw her name only hours before our next issue is due out. You’ll see why in a bit, assuming I don’t fall asleep in my chair.
Update: Here’s the best joke I’ve seen thus far regarding the withdrawl:
I think it’s best to put this in perspective:
Harriet Miers nomination as a member of the Supreme Court was willfully aborted 4 weeks after conception.
This is about as close to Roe vs. Wade as she ever got.

I think this is the first time in personal history that I got breaking news from the OC blog. Take that, MSM! (Nevermind that the link is to an AP article.)

I saw this on Drudge earlier, but I try not to blog from work more than two days in a row.

If only I’d made a podcast, then I could’ve really scooped those east coast media elites.

According to this PFAW release (hat tip Bill) the White House has “surrendered to ultraconservatives”.
Wait. Since when was the anti-Miers wing made up of “ultraconservatives”? Did I miss a meeting?

That press release is pretty much everything I hate about national politics in a nutshell. All that’s missing is the appeal to the word of a deity.

Savage was against her..

Yeah, but the Focus on the Family nutjob wing was solid, at least to begin with. James Dobson had a message from God on the subject, or something.
My impression was that the opposition to Miers began with what Hugh Hewitt called the “elites” - lawprofs, National Review folks, George Will.

The elites again! Damn them and their mastery of language and law!

Of course, conservative lawprofs, National Review folks, and George Will get called “ultraconservative” all the time. As do most of the best judges on the bench. Shit, to Charles Schumer anyone to the right of Charles Schumer is “ultraconservative.” It doesn’t necessarily mean the same thing as “religious conservative.”

Maybe they can give her an easier job, like FEMA director.
